Located next to the “carro” – the highest point in the region – the vines extend over the south-facing slopes where they enjoy exceptional exposure to the sun as well as a perfect drainage. The winery has revived a series of traditional vinification processes which today are considered state-of-the-art amongst the best wines, in particular the fermentation in French oak vats. This philosophy of consummate preservation, which crosses the whole production process, is aimed at obtaining top quality raw material. There is little intervention by man, allowing the wine to express its vigor and potential on its own. The entire harvest is manual and nocturnal, thus providing greater care for the grapes and a more careful selection. The winemaking process focuses on spontaneous fermentation, low sulphite use and overally minimal human intervention. Their low environmental impact continues with their packaging. Most of our bottles are made of 100% recycled glass, the paper used on labels and shipping are also recycled and/or with a higher percentage of cotton. The base idea behind the project is to make honest and uncomplicated wines, without any additions or “finishings”, giving all the attention to the grapes and vineyard. The main focus is always the same: minimum intervention in the vineyard and in the cellar, letting the grapes take their own path in becoming wine, revealing all their potential in a natural way. Another pillar of the Gardunha Sul project is to forage, collect and reproduce ancient local and regional grape varieties, almost forgotten to time – varieties that enrich the wines with typicity and identity. The location of the winery allows to harvest grapes from the south part of the Gardunha mountain, where the grapes mature very well in the hot dry climate (giving more body, structure, and alcohol) and harvest from the north side, where grapes have a longer period of maturation due to a milder climate, which gives less alcohol, more natural acidity and more elegance. Acquired by the current generation’s grandfather, Frederico Eduardo Rosa Santos, from his mother-in-law (the great-grandmother Rosinda Mayer Caldas Botelho Moniz), it has remained in the family for over 400 years. Around 1620, Cristóvão Botelho Sequeira, a native of Seixal, settled in Óbidos as Monteiro-Mor from the same village and received land for services to the Kingdom. His son, Belchior Botelho Sequeira, inherits his father's properties and, by Alvará Real, is named 1st Morgado de Valverde. With it, the farm's agricultural activities were developed and consolidated, namely the production of wines. The Morgadio, transmitted from generation to generation, through the first-born male, finds its zing after seven generations. In the 2nd half of the 19th century, under the management of Gertrudes Magna Romeyro da Fonseca Botelho and her son Francisco Botelho Moniz de Sequeira, it reached a production of around 1,000,000 liters of wine, essentially for export. Some specimens from this period remain at rest in the wine cellar on the farm. An engineer by trade, Mr. Verdelho had traveled the world over but settled in the land of his ancestors to plant (and protect) vines in the unique Douro valley in the 1980s. This was the fulfillment of an old dream that had come from his youth, when his father and grandfather were planting vineyards, or when he was involved in the production of wine in his great-uncle's cellars, treading the grapes in granite presses and following the entire fermentation and aging process of the wines, carried out in large wooden vats made from the macacaúba wood. Today, the 15 ha project produces unique age-worthy wines made from the ancestral grapes of the Douro. Elegant, classic, old-school wines. In addition, 2ha of pre-phylloxera vines adjacent to the main estate feature a field blend of varietals, some no longer even recognized in the grape variety register of the region, producing a rare breed of wines on special years. With the guidance of friends, he learned the craft of caring for vines. These 30-80 year old vines are situated on hillsides at about 150 meters (around 500 feet) elevation and have been farmed organically since 2021. The name “Chinado” has a perfect double meaning. ‘Chinado’ is slang for ‘stabbed,’ as ‘chino’ is slang for knife. Some of João’s wines can catch us off guard and might give us a little nick, perhaps a little zip on our palates.
