QUINTA DO AVELAR
One of the oldest producers in one of the oldest wine regions in Portugal, Bucelas (“Bucellas”), Quinta do Avelar is situated in one the most noble regions of this all-white DOC. Recognized for wines made with the Arinto grape, the region became famous by the Duke of Wellington, who made this “Portuguese Hock” famous and fashionable in London in the 1800s.
Quinta do Avelar is inserted into an area with a very specific microclimate - very cold winters and mild summers, that despite temperature fluctuations, never reach excessive temperatures. These conditions lend an exquisite acidity to wines, in an area typically known for its freshness and ease.
The acidity applies to both their 100% Arinto as well as their Vinhas Velhas (Old Vines), a rare find in a wine region torn due to real estate development and even rarer in white wine territory.
